Welcome to Mixed Media Art

Mixed Media Art is based in Nelson New Zealand. Launched in January 2007,our online art catalogue features New Zealand artists and their original mixed media art and handcrafts.

What is Mixed Media Art ?

Mixed media, in visual art, refers to an artwork in which more than one medium has been used. It may incorporate found objects, collage, writing; text, paper, wallpaper, photographs; fabric, stitch or combinations of drawing and painting.

The Mixed Media Art website concentrates on Mixed Media Art, rather than 'Fine Art'. The term 'Fine Art' was first used in 1767, as a translation from the French term beaux arts and covers a limited number of visual art forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture and printmaking.

Artists using Mixed Media Art

Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso included text, fabric and paper in their Cubist art works in the early 20thCentury. Marcel Duchamp produced kinetic art and ready-made sculptures, while Joseph Cornell placed delicate found objects inside his boxes.
